The Epistle appointed to be read during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass today is taken from Saint Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians, Chapter 6, Verses 10-17.
be strengthened in the Lord, and in the might of His power.
Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and power, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.
Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth, and having on the breastplate of justice, And your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace:
In all things taking the shield of Faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. And take unto you the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God).
Please stand for the Holy Gospel.
The Gospel appointed to be read during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass today is taken from the Holy Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 18, Verses 23-35.
At that time, Jesus spoke to His Apostles this parable:
"The Kingdom of Heaven is likened to a king, who would take an account of his servants. And when he had begun to take the account, one was brought to him, that owed him ten thousand talents. And as he had not wherewith to pay it, his lord commanded that he should be sold, and his Wife and Children and all that he had, and payment to be made. Thus far are the words of today's Holy Gospel.
But that servant falling down, besought him, saying:Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.And the lord of that servant being moved with pity, let him go and forgave him the debt.
But when that servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow servants that owed him an hundred pence: and laying told of him, throttled him, saying:Pay what thou owest. And his fellow servant falling down, besought him, saying:Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.
Now his fellow servants seeing what was done, were very much grieved, and they came and told their lord all that was done.
Then his lord called him; and said to him:Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all the debt, because thou besoughtest me: Shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant, even as I had compassion on thee? And his lord being angry, delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt.
So also shall My Heavenly Father do to you, if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts."
In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Here Saint Paul the Apostle is telling each and everyone of us that because we have many powerful spiritual enemies, we must “take unto” ourselves the Spiritual “armour of God”.
What does this mean?
It means that we must make proper preparations in advance before we enter into the Spiritual battle against our Spiritual enemies. In other words, each one of us must make the proper use of the necessary Spiritual means in order to overcome all temptations and to remove all that is dangerous to our eternal salvation. It is only by properly preparing ourselves in advance, before the Spiritual battles against our Spiritual enemies, that we shall “be able to resist in the evil day”.
In other words, to remain immovable when we are tempted and to persevere in the Grace of God. This is the situation all of us face because all of us must fight against the Spiritual enemies of our salvation during our entire lifetime - as long as we live - as the Scripture testifies:
“the life of man upon earth is a warfare.” (Job 7:1.)We must work, we must labor, in order to be admitted into Heaven. Why?
“The Kingdom of Heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.” (Matthew 11:12.)All of us must spiritually fight very valiantly in order to be victorious and conquer our Spiritual enemies. Why? Because none of us will be crowned with the crown of life in Heaven unless each of us have been triumphant in these Spiritual battles against our Spiritual enemies.
So just exactly what are the Spiritual Weapons we must use in these Spiritual battles so that we can conquer all of our Spiritual enemies?
The Holy Apostle mentions these Spiritual weapons by painting a verbal picture of the complete armor of a Roman soldier and adapting it to our Spiritual armor and our Spiritual Weaponry.
A Roman soldier had a helmet on his head, a sword in his right hand, a shield on his left arm, and a coat of mail on his chest, around the loins was a broad belt which was covered with thin iron, and on his feet were boots which had sharp points on them.
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with Truth, and having on the breastplate of justice.”
The Spiritual enemies of our Soul try to Spiritually and morally blind us in order to seduce us by various lies, fallacies, falsehoods, deceit, and various types of deceptions, just as Satan did in the Garden of Paradise, when, in the guise of the serpent, he seduced Eve.
Our Spiritual enemies try to tell us that this or that is not really a sin, or at least it is not a mortal sin.
They tempt us further by claiming that we shall become perfectly happy by committing such a sin, e.g. the proverbial “white lie” - which is not “white”, but is certainly a sin! Sometimes they lie by trying to convince us that God is infinitely merciful and indulgent with the weakness of men.
In 1971 when We were visiting some very distanct relatives in Northern Michigan, it came about that they had some of their relatives stop by to visit with a friend of Ours, and Ourself.
Fortunately, We were sitting on a chair when one of these visitors was gleefully talking about some kind of a week-end quasi-religious get-together for married couples which they had attended at their local parish church just the previous week-end. We remember how the Husband repeated with great delight, and overflowing joy, as he proudly proclaimed how the Layman, who had conducted the said week-end quasi-religious get-together, had taught everyone:
“God is not in the punishment business!”Needless to say, We almost fell off the chair at such a blatant heresy! Of course, We very quickly explained how this heretical statement was not true as proven by many books in the Bible, most especially the Apocalypse!
But Our rebuttal fell on deaf ears! People will believe what they want to believe!
Unfortunately, a number of people have told Us, over the years, how either they, or someone they know, had gone to the so called NEW mass at, what is, de facto, the .anti-Catholic. Satanic. Synod. Vatican 2. pseudo-church. of .automatically. excommunicated. Apostates. and. Modernist. Heretics, and .NEW. Theology. Heretics, where they heard the Layman, a pretend-“priest”, proudly profess this abominable heresy during his “sermon”!
So all of us must combat such a diabolical, demonic, Satanic heresy that has, no doubt, brought in a huge harvest of too-trusting, ignorant Souls, damned to Hell for all eternity because, in believing what they wanted to believe, they believed this lie preached during “sermons” by various so-called clergy of the .anti-Catholic. Satanic. Synod. Vatican 2. pseudo-church!
Such clergy do the work of the devil - not the work of God!
Therefore, all of us must protect ourselves against all subtle heresies, no matter who, or what, the source might be!
It is by the proper use of the Spiritual girdle of the beautiful Truths of Our One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, Faith that all of us must not only defend the beautiful Truths of our One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic. Faith against all heresies and heretics, but also to protect ourselves from such blatant lies, heresies, and all of the other diabolical evils of the .anti-Catholic. Satanic. Synod. Vatican 2. pseudo-church. of .automatically. excommunicated. Apostate. and. Modernist. Heretics, and .NEW. Theology. Heretics!
Refute such sources of Spiritual debauchery with the beautiful, unchangeable, infallible, Truths of the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, Church, as in this example:
“What you suggest to me is NOT True because my UNCHANGEABLE, INFALLIBLE CATHOLIC FAITH tells me the very opposite of what you say, and, by the Most Holy Will and Grace of God, it is to these UNCHANGEABLE, INFALLIBLE, IMMUTABLE Truths of the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, Church to which I will cling until my dying breath! BEGONE SATAN!”If Eve had girded herself about with the Truth, the devil could not have persuaded her to sin. Today, IF we gird ourselves about with the Truth, in every temptation, we also shall be safe against every fall.
“Justice” here means the perfect fulfilment of the Divine Law, true holiness. Therefore, as Patriarch Saint John Chrysostom [b. Antioch, c. 347 A.D. - d. at Commana in Pontus on Friday, September 14, 407 A.D.], Patriarch of Constantinople [Thursday, February 26, 398 A.D. - Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D.], exiled from his See the 2nd time on Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D., Father and Doctor of the Catholic Church, observes: “the breastplate of justice” is a life adorned with every Virtue.
Just as the physical breastplate, today it is better known as body armor or a bullet-proof vest, defends the chest of an actual soldier on the field of battle against what during the days of the Roman Soldier was the spear, and today the bullets, fired upon them by their enemies, so also Justice is a protection against the assaults of Satan.
When Satan tempts the Just to pride, Satan is overcome by the proper exercise of the Virtue of Humility. When Satan tempts the Just to impurity, Satan is overcome by the Virtue of Chastity. When Satan tempts the Just to anger and to revenge, Satan is overcome by the Virtue of Meekness.
In other words, when Satan tempts the Just to commit a sin, Satan is conquered by the Holy Virtue which is opposed to that particular sin. The Just who love God with their whole heart, and hate and detest sin as the greatest evil, make the proper use of the Spiritual means necessary for overcoming temptation. Hence, for this reason, the Just cannot be overcome by the enemies of their salvation.
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.”
The Roman soldiers wore shoes which covered the feet and ankles, and enabled them to walk safely on all kinds of roads, and prevented injury by bushes and thorns. With such Spiritual shoes we also must make the proper use. What are they? Our Spiritual shoes are a true zeal for living a life of the practice of daily Virtue as an expression of our continual aspiration to Spiritual perfection which is the real living of the Spiritual Life.
This zeal is necessary because walking on the path of Virtue presents many difficulties. For example, those who fall away from their first fervor and become tepid, will soon grow weary in the living of a life of Virtue.
The Apostle says that our feet must be shod, that is, we must have great zeal for “the Gospel of Peace”. In other words, walking on the path of Virtue - the real living of the Spiritual Life - leads us to peace with God.
Today, those of us who faithfully and fervently serve God already enjoy the peace of a good conscience in this life and will be rewarded with the everlasting peace of the Children of God which awaits them in the next life in Heaven.
When the worldlings do so much for the acquisition of temporal comforts, goods, pleasures, power, and conveniences, all of which are vain and fleeting, why should we not readily and willingly make any and every sacrifice in order to acquire for ourselves the unspeakable Blessing of Heavenly peace?
all things taking the shield of Faith,
wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one.”
The Apostle calls Faith a “shield”, for just as a physical shield protected the Roman soldier against deadly darts, so also Faith protects the Christian Catholic against those sins which, in moments of temptation, he is liable to fall.
It is Faith that teaches all of us how miserable we make ourselves when we yield to temptation and sin which sin forfeits the Love and Grace of God, not to mention all of our acquired merit, plus Heaven, and which sin exposes us to the dangers of everlasting perdition.
Faith tells us what a great rewards await us IF we overcome temptations and re main faithful to God. In doing this, we acquire the Love and Approbation of God, plus our eternal salvation! How could it be possible for those who really ponder these Truths of the Holy Catholic Faith to ever consent to temptation and thus to fall into sin? God forbid!
“The fiery darts of the most wicked one” are most especially temptations to impurity with which the devil so viciously assaults people. In 1917 Our Blessed Mother told the three children at Fatima that more Souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason. And that was in 1917! She also said that World War I was a punishment from God because of so many bad marriages! Apparently adultery was running rampant, even back then?!
“The fiery darts of the most wicked one” also include, in general, all temptations which frequently assail people with great vehemence and allure them to sin. Against these sins, the “shield of Faith” protects us, for its eternal, unchangeable Truths, when we meditate upon them, place us in a Holy mindset, inspire us with a detestation of all evil and all sin, and urge us to have recourse to God by fervent prayer, whereby we gain strength sufficient to come forth victorious from the most severe struggles.
“And take unto you the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit (which is the Word of God).”
By “helmet of salvation” we are to understand the hope of eternal salvation. For as “the helmet” protects the head against the blows of the enemy, so also the hope of eternal salvation protects us against all the attacks of Satan and his human agents.
For example, consider the Holy Martyrs. Some of them were promised honors and dignities, riches and pleasures of every description, if they would renounce their Holy Catholic Faith, but they resisted the temptation and remembered these words of Christ:
“What doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26.)They were threatened with the confiscation of their property, with prison and death, and these threats were executed with unheard-of cruelty; but they remained faithful to Christ and to the Holy Catholic Faith, and said with the Apostle:
“That which is at present momentary and light of our tribulation, worketh for us above measure exceedingly an eternal weight of glory.” (2 Corinthians 4:17.)It was also in the hope of Heaven that so many Christian Catholics of both genders renounced the world, with all its pleasures and enjoyments, and passed their whole lives in seclusion, in mortification, and in works of Christian Catholic Charity. With Saint Paul they said:
“I count all things to be but loss, for the excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but as dung, that I may gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:8.)Therefore, in all of your temptations, think of Heaven and its unspeakable eternal joys! Then it will become plain to you how vain and fleeting are the things of this world so that you will turn away from all of it with contempt and disgust and say: “Begone, Satan!”
“The sword of the Spirit” is “the Word of God”.
The Apostle calls “the Word of God” a “sword”, which is one of the most effectual weapons to put the evil spirits to flight. “The Word of God” comprises edifying discourses, hymns, ejaculatory prayers, real Traditional Catholic sermons, true Traditional Catholic catechetical instructions, wholesome admonitions, the Sacred Scriptures found in the Douay-Rheims Bible, which is the ONLY approved English translation of the Traditional Catholic Bible, pre-Vatican 2 Spiritual books, and the Lives of the Saints. Remember how Christ resisted and overcame the devil with the Word of God. (Matthew 4:3-10.)
“It can neither profit me, the speaker, to speak, nor you, the hearers, to hear, unless we comply with the things which are spoken, ...so let us not limit the display of our zeal to hearing only, but let us observe what is said in our deeds. For it is indeed a good thing to spend time continually in hearing the Divine oracles: but this good thing becomes useless when the benefit to be derived from hearing is not linked with it.” (Patriarch Saint John Chrysostom [b. Antioch, c. 347 A.D. - d. at Commana in Pontus on Friday, September 14, 407 A.D.], Patriarch of Constantinople [Thursday, February 26, 398 A.D. - Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D.], exiled from his See the 2nd time on Thursday, June 24, 404 A.D., Father and Doctor of the Catholic Church. Sermon on Romans 12:20; emphasis added.)
For our resolutions, let all of us, by the Grace of God, beginning right now, firmly resolve to recall and to remember the above proper Spiritual weapons with which you must fight against Satan and his human agents, no matter who they are, including, but not limited to, most especially the so-called Laymen, a.k.a. Lay-clergy, a..k.a. pretend priests, pretend bishops, pretend cardinals, pretend popes, who are the de facto members of the .anti-Catholic. Satanic. Synod. Vatican 2. pseudo-church. of .automatically. excommunicated. Apostate. and. Modernist. Heretics, and .NEW. Theology. Heretics. Make a proper use of such Spiritual weapons and, by the Grace of God, struggle with courage and determination, with bravery and perseverance.
One should not forget to make the proper use of assisting at ONLY the Traditional Catholic FHoly Sacrifice of the Mass - and never go to the 16th Century updated, modernized, synthesized, Protestant Memorial Supper Meal used in the .anti-Catholic. Satanic. Synod. Vatican 2. pseudo-church. of .automatically. excommunicated. Apostates. and. Modernist. Heretics, and .NEW. Theology. Heretics, which teaches the heresy that: God is not in the punishement business!
Make a good use of the prayers and pious devotions of the Catholic Church, including Holy Water and the daily Exorcism, plus performing acts of supererogation which wins for you the victory over sin in advance by becoming one of God's favorities by which you receive special Graces no one else is worthy to receive!
Ultimately, the time of the warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil and his human agents is relatively short because it extends itself only over our fleeting earthly lifetime.
But take courage and remember that the fruits of your victory will endure for all eternity in the Joys and Happiness of Heaven. Blessed arc we, IF in the days of our earthly life, we struggle with the proper Spiritual weapons of living a life of Virtue as part of our daily Spiritual Life against the vicious and evil Spiritual enemies of our salvation.
IF we conquer these Spiritual enemies, then, at the end of our earthly life, we can confidently look forward to eternity in Heaven, saying with the Holy Apostle:
“I have fought a good fight; I have finished my course; I have kept the Faith. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the Just Judge, will render to me in that day.” (2 Timothy 4:7- 8). Amen.
“Therefore take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and to stand in all things perfect.” (EPISTLE, Ephesians 6:13.)
